Welcome

The Indian Education Department is supported by three sources of funds consisting of operational dollars and two federal supplemental programs. These programs consist of Title VIII Impact Aid and Title VII Indian Education Formula Grant.

 

The Indian Parent Committee, consisting of eight (8) members, provides input, guidance and involvement in the planning and monitoring of the programs.

 

Mission Statement

By working together with schools and the communities, APS Indian Education Department will develop enhanced and supportive educational opportunities for Native American students while teaching respect for language and cultural differences.

 

Vision Statement

All Native American students will succeed when meaningful learning occurs with the use of cultural relevance, effective teaching strategies and support systems. 

 

2008 – 2009 Indian Education Department Goals and Measures:

 

  1. To improve literacy skills of APS Native American students in grades K-12 as measured by pre and post Reading Intervention assessment scores by the end of SY 2008-09 through integration of culturally relevant materials.
  2. To improve communication with the greater community and parents of Native American students who attend APS by 10%.
  3. To increase school attendance by 10% through targeting schools with high absenteeism.
  4. To improve and increase partnerships with neighboring tribes and communities.
  5. To increase instruction of Native languages and culture for Native American students through development of Indigenous curriculum and evaluation rubrics.
  6. To increase parental involvement through attendance of monthly IPC/IEC meetings by 10%.
